In 1964 the QRU initiated the establishment of the Gold Coast Rugby
Union Football Club that played its first game in the Brisbane
Competition in 1965, making it the foundation club for Gold Coast
Rugby. The Club has over its history produced more Wallabies and
Queensland Reds players than any other Club on the Gold Coast.
Prior to 1972, The Gold Coast Rugby Union Football Club was based at
Rudd Park, Burleigh Heads, until the Overell family provided the land
on Brighton Parade at Southport, on the basis of a rugby club being
based and playing at what is now James Overell Park.
